Vice Chancellor and Climate Protection Minister honour sustainable green events and sports clubs

Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler and Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, together with the Green Events Austria network, honoured the 28 most sustainable festivals, cultural events, sporting events and sports clubs in Austria and awarded the eight best as competition winners.

Austria is a pioneer in sustainable event organisation with the Green Events Austria initiative https://greeneventsaustria.at/. The nationwide initiative regularly sets new impulses and helps to ensure that common minimum requirements for sustainable events are shared throughout Austria.

"Green Events make an important contribution to a good environment. They rely on climate-friendly travel, ensure that more regional, organic and fair-trade food and beverages are on offer and thus support the local economy. By using reusable systems, they also actively avoid waste. This saves valuable resources and is good for the climate. Congratulations and a big thank you to all sustainable organisers and associations," said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler.

The "Win sustainably!" competition has been running for 12 years!

The "Win sustainably!" competition was jointly launched by the "Green Events Austria" network in 2011 and annually awards sustainable sports and cultural events, festivals and events, and since 2017 also sports clubs. So far, around 980 events from all over Austria with almost 13 million participants and guests have taken part in all eleven competitions. In total, about 27,000 individual Green Events measures were realised.

"The award-winning Green Events make a significant contribution to a sustainable event industry in Austria. With their commitment, they take on a pioneering role and show how sustainable event organisation can be implemented in practice." emphasises Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Sport Werner Kogler.

Competition "Win sustainably! 2022/2023"

In 2022/23, 163 events and sports clubs from all over Austria took part. Among them were 40 sporting events, 16 sports clubs, 52 cultural events and 55 festivals.

The winners in the "Festivals" category were PUR 22 - Landeslager der Salzburger Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen in Salzburg and Advent im Park - Baden FAIRzaubert 2022 in Lower Austria.

The Ars Electronica Festival 2022 - Welcome to Planet B in Upper Austria as well as the OKH Birthday Weekend 2022 in Upper Austria convinced in the category "Cultural Events".

In the "Sporting Events" category, the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2023 from Upper Austria and the 7th Beach Volleyball Tournament for a Good Cause from Burgenland came out on top.

The winning sports clubs in this competition are the Rowing Club Wels from Upper Austria and the Judounion Klosterneuburg from Lower Austria.

This year's nominees and award winners received Fairtrade Austria products and prize money totalling €20,000. Partners of the competition from the event industry were Tomra, Cup Solutions and Coca Cola - as well as Aqua Alpina, myclimate and the WKO.

The festive award event was officially certified as a Green Meeting according to the highest requirements of the Austrian Ecolabel.

Among the award-winning events in the competition were also six that could be certified with the Austrian Ecolabel for Green Meeting.

Start of the "sustainable win" competition 2023/2024:

Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler and Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler jointly launch the new competition period, in which, as in the previous year, the most sustainable sports events and clubs, cultural events as well as festivals will be awarded.

"In 2023/2024, we will continue this success story together with all our partners, especially with the many committed and innovative event organisers, which is why we are once again launching the Sustainable Winning! competition and look forward to receiving numerous entries by the end of March 2024."
